Grateful Dead Road Trips Vol. 1 No. 1 Fall'79 1979 CT PA MD NY MI Live GD 2 CD
Grateful Dead : Road Trips Vol. 1 – Fall’79!!! Road Trips Series release! 2 CD : 2007 (1979/2007) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) : G. Grateful Dead’ Road Trips’ Series release!! 1979 Fall Tour Grateful Dead!!! From >>> New Haven, CT 10/25/79 – Philly Spectrum, PA 11/6/79 – Capital Center, MD 11/8/79 – Buffalo, NY 11/9/79 & Ann Arbor, MI 11/10/79!!!! ” Road Trips Volume 1 / Number 1 “… Release from this Fantastic Series!! – the one that kicked-off the frenzy, and all of our fellow ” Road Trips ” addictions. Folks, this one is simply a Blockbuster! 1979 Grateful Dead is a Beautiful-Time! In the Band’s development, and this is coming from someone with a fine-tuned & adoring “’80’s Dead ” ear. This is the next-step in the’ Evolution’ from the Pigpen, T. And Keith & Donna eras. It’s Brent Time! Now, and this is a Very-Big Man! In a small package. This Guy can bring the Heat! When I’ve gotten into drag down anti-Brent conversations over the last 30 years, here’s what I would always say : Brent Mydland has more Talent & Raw Soul in his little-pinky-finger than most Musicians could-every-dream -of – period. And’ Thanks’ specifically to Bob Weir (& Jerry Garcia) – Brent very-willingly joined their & our! Twelve straight years of Brilliant! Live and Studio Music for the rabid Dead Fans. Brent played his 1st Show with the Band in San Jose, CA on 4/22/79 and the best part of this fine release is that two key things happen… Brent & the rest of the band have begun to work out the kinks of the 1st six-months (the adjustment period) – and this release captures them at Six different high-energy East Coast venues in October & November’79 on Fall Tour! – which was really the first-stage of them letting loose together, and taking daring chances as a true unit. Clearly the Fans and the Boys! Were able to reap the rewards of this synergy that was becoming very fine-tuned – with a very-bright future ahead. And secondly, Jerry Garcia begins to enter into three fine key stages of appreciation love affairs, if I may… Of Brent and his vocal and musical contributions on stage, his brand new Doug Irwin Axe ” Tiger ” – and his highly-audible & increased passion for his MXR script-logo! To put it frankly, Jerry’s increased aggressive picking attack & nastier / moodier tone begin to have more guts – he’s using more distortion, and with the swiftest of authority & command. This’79 Fall Tour is just Blistering-Hot! – and this initial Road Trips effort remains very true to form in the fact that it pulls smoking-segments & many Moments of Magic! From 10/25 (New Haven, CT) – 11/6 (Philly Spectrum) – 11/8 Cap Center MD! – 11/9 (Buffalo) & 11/10 (Ann Arbor). Unlike some of the later releases in this Series (Full-Shows + add itional segments from other Shows), this one is a True ” Road Trip ” and it takes you on the exact one the Band took 40-Years Ago! – thus sharing a very-nice chunk of the True Live Goodies! In order as they authentically happened Live on Stage. I’ve talked to people that feel this 1st release was actually the Very-Best! Of all, and it continued to stand above all other throughout the rest of the series. I personally enjoy plenty of them, and it would be very-hard to pick favorites – but I can certainly understand this very-valid argument. This is just plainly and simply a 2 -CD Heater!!! I think I’m going to take the initiative at this time to label this one an Absolute! ” Must-Have ” for Deadheads, and it’s a complete no-brainer for all of the Early 80’s -Era G. Who can just never get enough of this stuff. Nothin’s shakin’ on Shakedown Street… Ahhh, but, oh Yes there Is!!! Alabama Getaway > Promised Land Jack Straw > Deal Dancing In The Street > Franklin’s Tower Wharf Rat > I Need A Miracle > Bertha > Good Lovin. Shakedown Street Passenger Terrapin Station > Playing In The Band Not Fade Away > Morning Dew. (2007 GDP / Rhino release) Grateful Dead Road Trips Vol. 1 Fall’79 CD Set (2-CD Set) is in Very Good condition – close to Very Good/Like New overall. Grateful Dead Dick's Picks 3 Volume Three Pembroke Pines FL 5/22/77 1977 UK 2 CD
Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 3 Volume Three : May 22, 1977 (5/22/1977) – Sportatorium – Pembroke Pines – Florida (FL) : 2 CD : GDCD2 4022 : 1995 (1977/1995) Grateful Dead Records / Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDR / GDP) – Very-Rare! Made In The UK! May 1977 Grateful Dead!!!!! Wow, way-back now – or at least I suppose. That’s when this one was released & the circumstances were as very-strange as they ever could ever possibly be, as my memory distinctly serves me. We were all devastated, and busy trying to lick a wound that we knew deep down would never heal. Jerry Garcia died on 8/9/1995, and this was the 1st ” Dick’s Picks ” released after his untimely passing. DP # 3 (5/22/77) was released in November’95, and normally this well-anticipated trip over to the CD Store would be like waiting for Santa Claus! To come to town, but – not this time. So, I still made the journey though, because I needed at least something in a feeble attempt to soothe the devastating situation at hand. Well knowing this could be good or bad, happy or sad. It ended up being lots of every emotion possible, quite naturally… But oh my goodness, what a monster release by Dick!!! ? ! I mean are you kidding me? ! ? I always had a real fondness for’77 Dead, and when I was a kid I would claim that I thought it was indeed the Grateful Dead at their ” Absolute-Finest “. I swore-by’77 Grateful Dead – and still do, of course. Over the years, my opinion has been all over the board as times & my musical tastes change – but there still is no denying 1977 as one-of (if not’ the’) best overall year for the Band. I had a majority of’77 in my cherished analog collection, and thankfully had a few very connected folks that looked out for me when it came to my’77 addiction… But when I got my hands on this 2-CD set, I was absolutely blown back – a truly Beyond-Powerful performance!! I guess some of it was that I strangely had yet to even hear it? But the two-track stereo sound was mind-blowing from a channel / separation standpoint. I mean this performance is right up there with the Binghamton’s – Buffalo’s – St. Louis’ – Manor Downs’ – Ithaca’s – Winterland’s, etc.. Of the’77 World. CD One gives you no-mercy & straight up cooks! With burning versions of Music – Lightning > Supplication – Dancin’ & Help > Slip! Then CD Two actually delivers yes, it’s true… ” Very-Best Grateful Dead I had ever heard “. Up there on the very ultra! Outside of a Rockin’ Samson, and incredibly-deep & exploratory versions of Estimated > Eyes — here comes the real doozie : Two (2) of the finest segue / song transitions in Grateful Dead History. I won’t discuss the specifics, or details because only the music itself can do that properly naturally… But what happens during Wharf Rat > Terrapin > Morning Dew is simply live-musical-perfection, and in a completely genius fashion! These are really the only words I can think of to use & explain… As truly, this is the kind of music that really cannot be’put’ into words – as to try, is to almost do it an injustice. This is really just that good. This piece of Grateful Dead’ Live’ History… DP # 3 — one of the Very-Very Best Ever! To this very day. The crazy-rare “UK Printing” GDCD2 4022’Made In The UK format!! My fellow Dead Fans!!! TRACK LISTING >>> Grateful Dead recorded’ Live’ at the Sportatorium in Pembroke Pines, Florida (FL) on May 22, 1977 (5/22/1977) : CD ONE : Funiculi Funicula The Music Never Stopped Sugaree Lazy Lightning > Supplication Dancin’ In The Streets Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower CD TWO : Samson And Delilah Sunrise Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World > Wharf Rat > Terrapin Station > Morning Dew. This was ” Dick’s Last Pick from the’77 Well “, and in some ways he did indeed save some nuggets of the best stuff for last. As with much of’77 Dead, the percussion time-keeping is just immaculate – but this is indeed one of those more-so uptempo nights where the energy flows freely, and good timing leads to good vocals, to good stage charisma, and to pushing the envelopes when the pockets present themselves. Vocally, they’re just on! Shows like this & Englishtown too! Make me wonder why he ever permanently parted with that MXR Distortion + and MXR Analog Delay… With the Reticon Chip! — these things just Take-Charge! — I mean turning Solos! But then again, it is Garcia driving them… The King of Rock’n Roll! And nobody can do it just’quite’ like him. Hip, hip hurrAhhh for this 1977 Grateful Dead Dick! I mean what else can I say? Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 24 Volume Twenty Four : March 23, 1974 (3/23/1974) – Cow Palace – Daly City, California (CA) : 2 CD : 2002 (1974/2002) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDP) – GDCD 4044 :’ Original!’74 Wall Of Sound!! Live’ in the California Bay Area!!! 1974 Grateful Dead Live! Through the One & Only! – inside the Bay Area!! At the Good Ol’ Cow Palace!!!!! Please Note >>> This is the Very-Rare! Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. Printing from 2002 GDCD 4044 – 1974/2002 GDP, Inc. 1974 Wall of Sound!!! Was this the’ Sound-Beast’ that sucked in the Grateful Dead and dragged them down?? ! As a Dead Fan myself – I think not – I believe it Amplified their Fantastic Musicianship! To a pristine-level, like no other band ever!!! However, I’ve certainly heard & read many tales of how this Monster! Of a sound system dragged them down both Band & Crew! Due to its sheer square foot size, and financial drain to keep it pumping. To my ear, 1974 is an immaculate period for the Band – and it is easy as an outsider to wonder why a band playing like this would hang it up possibly for good? – yet, so-thankfully’ not’ in October of’74 at the Winterland, announcing what would be billed as ” The Last One ” – thus the last Grateful Dead Concert ever?? Music & sound wise, this 3/23/74 Cow Palace Show is incredible and offers everything one would expect & hope for in a’74 performance : U. Wind – Scarlet – China > Rider – Weather Report Suite and that’s just on CD One! — CD 2 takes it way-deep and multidimensional… The Playin’ > Uncle John’s > Morning Dew > Uncle John’s > Playin’ is just big stuff – big-time, creative & Legendary! Musicianship by the Dead. The Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia at the end merely ices this cake of bliss. Inside the Liner Notes, Bear does his thing like only Bear can-do… Offering details, specs, talking-up / promoting & rightfully bragging about the ” Wall “. The 3/22/74 San Francisco Chronicle article sums this scene up in a way that almost nobody could do better with a title-article stating ” The Dead : Committed to Sound Perfection “. And that they are indeed. Here are just a few brief notes on the ” Wall ” that I can’t help but share with you : Six (6) Independent Sound Systems (one each-unique for Vocals, Lead-Guitar, Rhythm-Guitar, Piano, Bass & Drums)! — Eleven (11) separate Channels! — Forty-Eight (48) Amplifiers! Though I’m certain being fortunate enough to play through, or just listen to this System-of-a-System live is pure Joy & Bliss — but imaging hauling it around, and feeding (paying-for) all the fuel in its hungry tank! ? ! Those of you who saw it, I’m so Amazingly-Happy! As that does indeed enshrine you officially as a very-important part of Rock’n Roll History!! The Music & Concert World will never see anything like this again from a standpoint of size, quality & just blatant genius-dialed audible perfection. Here in the new millennium, wealthy bands like say the Rolling Stones – U2 or even Metallica can try… But nothing can – or ever will – hold-a-candle to the sound-perfection of the Grate! TRACK LISTING >>> Grateful Dead’ Live’ at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California (CA) on March 23, 1974 (3/24/1974) : CD ONE. Beat It On Down The Line. China Cat Sunflower >. I Know You Rider. Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 7 Volume Seven : Europe’74 Tour! September 1974 : Alexandra Palace – London, England UK – September 9 – 11, 1974 (9/9/1974 – 9/11/1974) : 3 CD : 1997 (1974/1997) Grateful Dead Records / Grateful Dead Merchandising, Inc. (GDR / GDM) – GDCD 4027 :’ Original! – at the Alexandra Palace!! – at the Alexandra Palace!!! Grateful Dead Europe’74!!!!! Europe’74 Tour, gosh – and I don’t even know exactly’ where’ to start on this-one. Wait, I know — visualize this : The Grateful Dead Movie (Jerry Garcia’s movie-making pride & joy) that most Deadheads have seen & all of us love! Well, here’s the same Band line-up – same energy – similar set lists & same spacey, yet musically spacious Grateful Dead – only the Performing in Europe! I’ve always felt that Musically, this Tour is way-underrated – and back in the analog! Day, it was extremely uncirculated as well – at least from a comparative standpoint. I do acknowledge that it was a short tour (only 7 shows in less than 2 months), but from the various portions I have heard, it is very tight – spacey & there are plenty of high energy moments, right alongside the equal ” far-out ” zones. I mean Hey Phil & Ned – Thanks for the Seastones & all of our ” Set 1.5’s “!! Also, I do believe this entire Tour was treated to the sweet sounds & tones of the Wolf (Irwin Guitar) courtesy of Jerry Garcia. We’ve got Keith & Donna very nicely settled in (arguably, I guess), and everything seems perfect — other than that little problem called complete burn-out from the road, and here everybody is ready to take a break, quit, end the band – an unknown hiatus?? I always like the G. Movie footage where Bob is hanging out with John Barlow and talking about focusing on solo projects. Hey, that’s where things were. I mean naturally Jerry the music machine was going to keep playing daily, but this opened up cool opportunities with Merl Saunders & the Legion Of Mary! So musically, you get what you would expect (and of course take for granted, naturally) on this Fall’74 3-Disc Set : The Scarlet – B. Wind – Monster Playing in the Band – Weather Report > Stella — and a Smoking! Uncle > NFA > Dark Star > Spam Jam > Morning Dew!!!!! But then, it was back to S. For what we all know (and even have seen) in the glorious & family-like atmosphere of the mid-October Winterland 5-Night Run, also billed as the ” The Last One ” Final Show(s)! For the Grateful Dead. I mean even the Ticket Stub itself from the 10/20/74 Winterland Show was ink-stamped ” THE LAST ONE ” right across the face! ? ! It didn’t last & next thing we know >>> Grateful Dead Alive in’75! Grateful Dead : Road Trips Vol. 1 – Big Rock Pow Wow’69 : 1969 Tour! Seminole Indian Reservation Village – West Hollywood, Florida (FL) : May 23 & 24, 1969 (5/23/1969 & 5/24/1969) : 3 CD : 2010 (1969/2010) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) – GRA2-6018 : G. May’69 Road Trip! To a’ Summer of’69!! The Grateful Dead delivering the goods’69 Style! Inside the Florida’ Seminole Indian Village’ at the 1969 ” Big Rock Pow Wow “!!!! The Grateful Dead along with Johnny Winter – Joe South – Muddy Waters – Timothy Leary – and many others… Hanging out on a Friday & Saturday in West Hollywood, Florida (just north of Miami) at the Seminole Indian Reservation Village getting ready to collectively deliver some serious 1969 Rock’n Roll!!! As mentioned in the inside Liner Notes of this 3-CD Set – Florida, most of the South, and even the North, East & West too (maybe not quite so-much in the West) were all of a sudden becoming not too welcoming to the live rock scene (and specifically the psychedelic music scene) due to Jim Morrison’s recent stage antics at a gig in Miami in March of’69 where he was arrested (on-stage) for drunk & disorderly conduct – and as the’ Legend’ goes : even going as far as’ exposing’ himself on stage. Whether that did or didn’t happen, the point is that the media caught wind and there was a semi-rise up directly against the scene. I catch the drift that Florida authorities were not too fond of this movement and trouble was in the air, so everybody had to be extra careful. So what better solution than heading up to the more secluded & protected Seminole Indian Reservation for some hassle-free (or at least much-less hassle free) Rock’n Roll! ? ! In fact, why not book some of the great musical minds at the time & really just go for it in a 2-day festival-style?? ! Wow, I love the sounds of this one. And here’s the catch… While the Grateful Dead (& especially Jerry Garcia) are always quoted as saying they always had a tendency to ” really just blow-it at the all big ones ” – well, here my friends is an example where they really just ” Smoke-It “!!! And it’s indeed a big-one, at least nowadays in the historical context. They deliver a truly legendary outdoor performance, as far as my ears are concerned. Here you have Garcia & Weir both plugging in Gibson Guitars! And Phil & Jerry dress for the occasion with some seriously fancy-pants : Jerry sporting bright Stripped-pants & Phil wearing Plaid-pants! Pigpen is in prime form, and really hauls the load serving as the vocal inspiration to both the Band & huge crowds! Another thing to mention is that T. Delivers some fantastic keyboard tones that soar & shine. Both Billy & Mickey soundly deliver a timing-perfect backbone, and this 1969 Grateful Dead unit is up & running on all cylinders. Just a fantastic & legendary performance. And if that alone is not enough to quench your thirst, you’ve got Dr. Roaming around the vicinity of the’ suspect’ orange juice jug that was apparently circulating well. What a scene, as I can only imagine it myself & hope that You were there. I remember striking up a conversation with a fellow Dead Fan in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot years ago, and we are talking in-depth about G. Music I know, just imagine that! , and towards the end of our chat he says to me you know man, I just pretty much listen to’69 Dead… I remember thinking it was a pretty bold & quite interesting claim when he said it, but over the years I have begun to really see what he meant by it. This one is a Real-Treasure! In my book, and probably needs to find its way rightful place in your CD rack!! May’69 ” Music-Festival ” Live-Dead!!! Hard To Handle Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Turn On Your Lovelight. Introduction Turn On Your Lovelight Doin’ That Rag > He Was A Friend Of Mine (Just A Hand To Hold) > China Cat Sunflower > The Eleven > Death Don’t Have No Mercy.
