Kurtzmann & Company antique upright piano. AGE: Based on the serial number the piano was built in 1907. GENERAL INFORMATION: The piano appears to be made of imported Honduran Mahogany wood under the old deteriorated finish and is of the Edwardian style. The Edwardian period (named for the reign of King Edward VII) was a transitional period that went from the elaborately carved Victorian style to the more stream-lined “modern” styles of the 20thCentury. This is why your piano has such a simple elegant look with carved details and simple moldings without being “too much”. The piano interior is original unrestored condition with the old strings. And felts still present. The average piano has about a 50-year life span before the felts, the piano is in such good condition at this age is a real testament to the quality that went into building it! The piano is a full-size Upright Grand piano. The superior sound of this quality cannot be found in most small modern upright pianos built today. The grain in the wood is very close together. When that tree was growing 200 years ago, America’s forests were very dense and trees had to struggle to grow. As a result, the wood rings are very close together due to slower growth. This wood with tight rings is more resonate and has much better tone quality than new pianos. This is a rare vintage quality piano. There is matching bench or with the piano. Kurtzmann & Company was established by Christian Kurtzmann in Buffalo, NY in 1848. In about 1859, C. Kurtzmann went into partnership with a gentleman by the name of Hinze to form the company of “Kurtzmann & Hinze”. Christian Kurtzmann dissolved this partnership sometime in the late 1860’s and started building pianos under his own name. During the 19th Century, Kurtzmann built a number of square grand piano models, slowly integrating upright and grand pianos into their line by the turn-of-the-century. The firm was incorporated as C. In 1901 and their factories were located on Niagara Street in Buffalo, NY. During the early 20th Century, C. Had gained control of the Capen Piano Company and Brockport Manufacturing Co. The Wurlitzer Piano Company took control of Kurtzmann in 1935, and built the Kurtzmann brand name until 1938. Kurtzmann was known for building very high quality, expensive pianos and organs, and their instruments were often very elaborate and sometimes “overbuilt”. These instruments are truly amazing examples of old-world quality and craftsmanship. This item is in the category “Musical Instruments & Gear\Pianos, Keyboards & Organs\Pianos\Upright Pianos”.
