Grateful Dead : Road Trips Vol. 1 – Big Rock Pow Wow’69 : 1969 Tour! Seminole Indian Reservation Village – West Hollywood, Florida (FL) : May 23 & 24, 1969 (5/23/1969 & 5/24/1969) : 3 CD : 2010 (1969/2010) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino (GDP / Rhino) – GRA2-6018 : G. May’69 Road Trip! To a’ Summer of’69!! The Grateful Dead delivering the goods’69 Style! Inside the Florida’ Seminole Indian Village’ at the 1969 ” Big Rock Pow Wow “!!!! The Grateful Dead along with Johnny Winter – Joe South – Muddy Waters – Timothy Leary – and many others… Hanging out on a Friday & Saturday in West Hollywood, Florida (just north of Miami) at the Seminole Indian Reservation Village getting ready to collectively deliver some serious 1969 Rock’n Roll!!! As mentioned in the inside Liner Notes of this 3-CD Set – Florida, most of the South, and even the North, East & West too (maybe not quite so-much in the West) were all of a sudden becoming not too welcoming to the live rock scene (and specifically the psychedelic music scene) due to Jim Morrison’s recent stage antics at a gig in Miami in March of’69 where he was arrested (on-stage) for drunk & disorderly conduct – and as the’ Legend’ goes : even going as far as’ exposing’ himself on stage. Whether that did or didn’t happen, the point is that the media caught wind and there was a semi-rise up directly against the scene. I catch the drift that Florida authorities were not too fond of this movement and trouble was in the air, so everybody had to be extra careful. So what better solution than heading up to the more secluded & protected Seminole Indian Reservation for some hassle-free (or at least much-less hassle free) Rock’n Roll! ? ! In fact, why not book some of the great musical minds at the time & really just go for it in a 2-day festival-style?? ! Wow, I love the sounds of this one. And here’s the catch… While the Grateful Dead (& especially Jerry Garcia) are always quoted as saying they always had a tendency to ” really just blow-it at the all big ones ” – well, here my friends is an example where they really just ” Smoke-It “!!! And it’s indeed a big-one, at least nowadays in the historical context. They deliver a truly legendary outdoor performance, as far as my ears are concerned. Here you have Garcia & Weir both plugging in Gibson Guitars! And Phil & Jerry dress for the occasion with some seriously fancy-pants : Jerry sporting bright Stripped-pants & Phil wearing Plaid-pants! Pigpen is in prime form, and really hauls the load serving as the vocal inspiration to both the Band & huge crowds! Another thing to mention is that T. Delivers some fantastic keyboard tones that soar & shine. Both Billy & Mickey soundly deliver a timing-perfect backbone, and this 1969 Grateful Dead unit is up & running on all cylinders. Just a fantastic & legendary performance. And if that alone is not enough to quench your thirst, you’ve got Dr. Roaming around the vicinity of the’ suspect’ orange juice jug that was apparently circulating well. What a scene, as I can only imagine it myself & hope that You were there. I remember striking up a conversation with a fellow Dead Fan in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot years ago, and we are talking in-depth about G. Music I know, just imagine that! , and towards the end of our chat he says to me you know man, I just pretty much listen to’69 Dead… I remember thinking it was a pretty bold & quite interesting claim when he said it, but over the years I have begun to really see what he meant by it. This one is a Real-Treasure! In my book, and probably needs to find its way rightful place in your CD rack!! May’69 ” Music-Festival ” Live-Dead!!!
