(GDP) – GDCD 4041 -‘ Original! Grateful Dead 1985 Twenty Years So Far!!! Night # 2 Show! At the Richmond Coliseum!!! 1985 Grateful Dead, you either love it or you don’t. I’ve come to that conclusion over the years – and there are two very distinct sides to the Deadhead-Camps of opinion. While some Fans can be critical of some of the Mid-80’s song-material, upbeat-tempos, and Garcia’s slightly grainier voice… Others idolize & treasure this period, can’t get enough, and must track down every note played from this powerful era of the Band’s development. Yes, 20 Years in here – and our heroes are still developing, evolving and growing as musicians!! ? ! I myself, reside in the later camp – live for this high-energy, chance-taking powerhouse G. And have for years & years. However, when I was a kid – I had yet to get’ bit’ by the Mid-80’s bug that my friends were always pushing – but then I was gradually infected. And infected for good. Once I gathered more & more chunks (analog cassettes, to be precise) of both Summer & Fall’85 Tours? I just couldn’t hear enough of this stuff – warts and all. It clearly is a magical, brawny & groundbreaking period for the Band, and I wholeheartedly consider it to be one of the Dead’s four major ” Prime-Eras “. The fact is, there is some youthful vigor to this 20-Year Old Grateful Dead – and they just simply get after it night after night, after night in 1985. Every Band Member has 20-years of playing experience under their belt, and my do they shine. This is without a doubt one of the most ” Rockin’ ” Grateful Dead Eras there ever was. Unlike say 1977, by’85 they have 125 + songs in their rotation, Tons of great original material (along with’ tons’ of great covers), just nailed down. There are brisk transitions, and hard-pushes on jams everywhere. Technology finally caught up with them too, as this was actually the 1st Digital Soundboard recording ever released in the Dick’s Pick Series. Every String-player & Drummer has their favorite toys & tools, and these Guitar & Bass Rigs And Drum-Kits are just ridiculous – top-notch stuff, with the finest unique sounds & tones. And the main topic here that cannot be denied is Garcia’s furious & vicious fret board picking attack, and massive tone. My theory though who really knows? Is that it was a wide-array of insane sounding Boss equipment HM-2 – OD-1 – OC-2, etc. That laid the platform, and he dialed up the silver-faced twin pre-amp up 1 notch on the intensity, and like 2 (or so) notches on the reverb dial. It’s just brisk, glassy & completely awesome. The only other J. Guitar-rig tone this ear-catching after 1985, was probably 1989 – but still, at this point we are talking about the post-MIDI era. I mean come on Folks & Fans everywhere, we are talking about’85 Greek – River Bend – Blossom – SPAC – Merriweather – Ventura – Red Rocks – Kaiser – Tampa – Fox – S. Worcester – Meadowlands – Oakland, etc.. We need a 73-CD Box Set (Like Europe’72) out quickly for this one – but as we all know, this dream unfortunately will probably never happen due to the many points (though, some obviously valid) made stiffly & sternly by the naysayers. I love that Dick Picked this Show for ” Us “!! The mixed-up, multi-surprise set list is just grand. The boys burn the candle at both ends throughout all-three Discs here in VA. Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 26 Volume Twenty Six : April 26, 1969 (4/26/1969) – Electric Theater – Chicago, Illinois (IL) & April 27, 1969 (4/27/1969) – Labor Temple – Minneapolis, Minnesota (MN) : 2002 (1969/2002) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDP) – GDCD 4046 :’ Original! 69 Live-Dead with some Amazing! Grateful Dead Productions 1st Issue Printing (GDCD 4046) – Not the Real Gone Re-Issue / Re-Print!! Good Ol’ Grateful Dead Fans!!! Here offered is the Rare’ Original’ 1st Printing! (GDCD 4046) of the Amazing!! Dick’s Picks Volume 26 2-CD Set from both the Electric Theater in Chicago (4/26), and the Labor Temple in Minneapolis (4/27) in 1969. In my personal opinion and also the opinion of many others… This 2 CD release offers Out of This World!!! In both of these Spring’69 Shows the performances are downright aggressive almost vicious! , creative / fresh, and the heavy jamming & song-segue transitions neatly demonstrate the early signs that this was simply a band like no other. I’ve often joked that there’s a small chance that these Shows might very well be the Very-First GREAT!!! Two (2) truly Magnificent! ” time-capsules ” of The Grateful Dead at their early (and arguably) 1st ” Best “. In sharing my personal opinion that this release is (believe it or not) a true candidate for ” Top Five (5) Dick’s Picks ” of the 36 in the Series! Naturally, of course depending on your ear-for-era and personal favorite time-periods & tours – but the powerful nature of this release can simply not be denied. And to think that sheer’69 G. Like this happened on 2-straight nights in 2 different mid-west cities! ? ! I think I want this whole’69 Spring Tour released… The more I think about. Garcia’s Gibson-tone is just flat out raunchy & awesome! Phil pushes the time-structure & jamming pockets like there is no tomorrow – consistently challenging Garcia, who openly welcomes it. Presence & sound-tones of the equipment seem to be ” just-right “, nearly perfect – really. & Mickey ravage the drums with near-perfection – as tempos change, and the band takes some big transitional-chances here – while both of them never even drop a beat. The China Cat > Doin’ That Rag > Cryptical > Other One > It’s a Sin are absolutely mind-blowing, and the Lovelight > Me & My Uncle > Sitting On Top of the World offers brilliant segue-transitions that will likely deliver chills up your spine. Oh, and here’s what Disc 2 has to say about that : Dark Star > St. Stephen > Eleven > Lovelight > Dew!!!!! If you haven’t heard this one, you really need to. And if you don’t already own this one in your collection? – then you might really want to consider doing so – seriously. This release is a flat-out Heater! Where our beloved Grateful Dead have just realized that they really-are-actually ” Just That Good “, and they show it all-night-long here – twice! – in April’69 for some so very fortunate Chicago & Minneapolis crowds. Some truly unreal musicianship is offered here – most definitely. And Thank You Dick for This-One!!! TRACK LISTING >>> Grateful Dead’ Live’ at the Electric Theater in Chicago, Illinois (IL) on April 26, 1969 (4/26/1969) – and – at the Labor Temple in Minneapolis, Minnesota (MN) on April 27, 1969 (4/27/1969) : CD 1 : Dupree’s Diamond Blues > Mountains Of The Moon > China Cat Sunflower > Doin’ That Rag Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > The Eleven > The Other One > I Know It’s A Sin Turn On Your Lovelight > Me & My Uncle > Sitting On Top Of The World CD 2 : Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Turn On Your Lovelight Morning Dew. Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 24 Volume Twenty Four : March 23, 1974 (3/23/1974) – Cow Palace – Daly City, California (CA) : 2 CD : 2002 (1974/2002) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDP) – GDCD 4044 :’ Original!’74 Wall Of Sound!! Live’ in the California Bay Area!!! 1974 Grateful Dead Live! Through the One & Only! – inside the Bay Area!! At the Good Ol’ Cow Palace!!!!! Please Note >>> This is the Very-Rare! Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. Printing from 2002 GDCD 4044 – 1974/2002 GDP, Inc. 1974 Wall of Sound!!! Was this the’ Sound-Beast’ that sucked in the Grateful Dead and dragged them down?? ! As a Dead Fan myself – I think not – I believe it Amplified their Fantastic Musicianship! To a pristine-level, like no other band ever!!! However, I’ve certainly heard & read many tales of how this Monster! Of a sound system dragged them down both Band & Crew! Due to its sheer square foot size, and financial drain to keep it pumping. To my ear, 1974 is an immaculate period for the Band – and it is easy as an outsider to wonder why a band playing like this would hang it up possibly for good? – yet, so-thankfully’ not’ in October of’74 at the Winterland, announcing what would be billed as ” The Last One ” – thus the last Grateful Dead Concert ever?? Music & sound wise, this 3/23/74 Cow Palace Show is incredible and offers everything one would expect & hope for in a’74 performance : U. Wind – Scarlet – China > Rider – Weather Report Suite and that’s just on CD One! — CD 2 takes it way-deep and multidimensional… The Playin’ > Uncle John’s > Morning Dew > Uncle John’s > Playin’ is just big stuff – big-time, creative & Legendary! Musicianship by the Dead. The Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia at the end merely ices this cake of bliss. Inside the Liner Notes, Bear does his thing like only Bear can-do… Offering details, specs, talking-up / promoting & rightfully bragging about the ” Wall “. The 3/22/74 San Francisco Chronicle article sums this scene up in a way that almost nobody could do better with a title-article stating ” The Dead : Committed to Sound Perfection “. And that they are indeed. Here are just a few brief notes on the ” Wall ” that I can’t help but share with you : Six (6) Independent Sound Systems (one each-unique for Vocals, Lead-Guitar, Rhythm-Guitar, Piano, Bass & Drums)! — Eleven (11) separate Channels! — Forty-Eight (48) Amplifiers! Though I’m certain being fortunate enough to play through, or just listen to this System-of-a-System live is pure Joy & Bliss — but imaging hauling it around, and feeding (paying-for) all the fuel in its hungry tank! ? ! Those of you who saw it, I’m so Amazingly-Happy! As that does indeed enshrine you officially as a very-important part of Rock’n Roll History!! The Music & Concert World will never see anything like this again from a standpoint of size, quality & just blatant genius-dialed audible perfection. Here in the new millennium, wealthy bands like say the Rolling Stones – U2 or even Metallica can try… But nothing can – or ever will – hold-a-candle to the sound-perfection of the Grate! TRACK LISTING >>> Grateful Dead’ Live’ at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California (CA) on March 23, 1974 (3/24/1974) : CD ONE. Beat It On Down The Line. China Cat Sunflower >. I Know You Rider.
