1898 Henry F Miller Upright grand Piano, imported Honduran Mahogany
1898 Henry F Miller Upright grand Piano, imported Honduran Mahogany. Condition is NOT refurbished. The piano is made of beautiful imported Honduran Mahogany wood and is of the Late Victorian style. The piano would be quite beautiful if professionally restored. Serial number is 23650. The piano is in overall un-restored condition with the old worn strings and felts still present. The average piano has about a 50-year life span before the felts, leather and strings deteriorate and need restoration. The fact the piano is in such good condition at this age is a real testament to the quality that went into building it! The piano is an upright grand and would have the sound of a full grand piano if it were professionally restored. If you look at the soundboard in the piano, you will see that the grain in the wood is very close together. When that tree was growing 200 years ago, the worlds forests were very dense and trees had to struggle to grow. As a result, the wood rings are very close together due to slower growth. This wood with tight rings is more resonate and has much better tone quality than new pianos. Unfortunately, most of this quality wood is gone forever. New pianos with green wood do not have the same sound because they are not as deep and resonate in tone quality. As these pianos are destroyed, this wonderful wood is lost forever. Luckily, people are beginning to realize the quality of these vintage instruments and they are investing in their restoration and preservation for future generations to enjoy. I have been told that after the piano is professionally restored, the value would be in the 24k range. MILLER PIANO COMPANY HISTORY. Very few piano makers contributed to the American piano industry at large as much as the renowned Henry F. Established in 1863, Henry F. Miller built high quality, expensive pianos in Boston for well over a century. In the 19th Century, Boston was home to a large population of old world craftsmen who had immigrated to the United States from the old country. These craftsmen possessed amazing skill in woodworking and piano building, and Henry F. Miller was in a position to take full advantage of this amazingly skilled workforce. Like most other Boston firms, Henry F. Miller enjoyed a reputation for building truly exceptional pianos. In the early years, Miller produced a full line of uprights, squares, and grand pianos. They also built a line of Pedal Pianos, which were conventional pianos equipped with a full pedal board to aide in organ instruction and practice. They introduced their player piano line after the turn-of-the-century, and built player pianos until the Great Depression era. In the 1920s, Henry F. Miller became part of the Continental Piano Company. Later the company became part of industrial giant Aeolian-American Corporation. Miller brand continued to be built by Aeolian until the 1980s. Miller is being built in China and marketed in the United States as an Asian import piano.
