Grateful Dead Dick's Picks 21 Volume Twenty One Richmond Virginia 11/1/85 3 CD
Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 21 Volume Twenty One : November 11, 1985 (11/1/85 : 11/1/1985) – Richmond Coliseum – Richmond, Virginia (VA)!!! + September 2, 1980 (9/2/1980) – Community War Memorial – Rochester, New York (NY)… 2001 (1980/1985/2001) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDP) – GDCD 4041 -‘ Original! Grateful Dead 1985 Twenty Years So Far!!! Night # 2 Show! At the Richmond Coliseum!!! 1985 Grateful Dead, you either love it or you don’t. I’ve come to that conclusion over the years – and there are two very distinct sides to the Deadhead-Camps of opinion. While some Fans can be critical of some of the Mid-80’s song-material, upbeat-tempos, and Garcia’s slightly grainier voice… Others idolize & treasure this period, can’t get enough, and must track down every note played from this powerful era of the Band’s development. Yes, 20 Years in here – and our heroes are still developing, evolving and growing as musicians!! ? ! I myself, reside in the later camp – live for this high-energy, chance-taking powerhouse G. And have for years & years. However, when I was a kid – I had yet to get’ bit’ by the Mid-80’s bug that my friends were always pushing – but then I was gradually infected. And infected for good. Once I gathered more & more chunks (analog cassettes, to be precise) of both Summer & Fall’85 Tours? I just couldn’t hear enough of this stuff – warts and all. It clearly is a magical, brawny & groundbreaking period for the Band, and I wholeheartedly consider it to be one of the Dead’s four major ” Prime-Eras “. The fact is, there is some youthful vigor to this 20-Year Old Grateful Dead – and they just simply get after it night after night, after night in 1985. Every Band Member has 20-years of playing experience under their belt, and my do they shine. This is without a doubt one of the most ” Rockin’ ” Grateful Dead Eras there ever was. Unlike say 1977, by’85 they have 125 + songs in their rotation, Tons of great original material (along with’ tons’ of great covers), just nailed down. There are brisk transitions, and hard-pushes on jams everywhere. Technology finally caught up with them too, as this was actually the 1st Digital Soundboard recording ever released in the Dick’s Pick Series. Every String-player & Drummer has their favorite toys & tools, and these Guitar & Bass Rigs And Drum-Kits are just ridiculous – top-notch stuff, with the finest unique sounds & tones. And the main topic here that cannot be denied is Garcia’s furious & vicious fret board picking attack, and massive tone. My theory though who really knows? Is that it was a wide-array of insane sounding Boss equipment HM-2 – OD-1 – OC-2, etc. That laid the platform, and he dialed up the silver-faced twin pre-amp up 1 notch on the intensity, and like 2 (or so) notches on the reverb dial. It’s just brisk, glassy & completely awesome. The only other J. Guitar-rig tone this ear-catching after 1985, was probably 1989 – but still, at this point we are talking about the post-MIDI era. I mean come on Folks & Fans everywhere, we are talking about’85 Greek – River Bend – Blossom – SPAC – Merriweather – Ventura – Red Rocks – Kaiser – Tampa – Fox – S. Worcester – Meadowlands – Oakland, etc.. We need a 73-CD Box Set (Like Europe’72) out quickly for this one – but as we all know, this dream unfortunately will probably never happen due to the many points (though, some obviously valid) made stiffly & sternly by the naysayers. I love that Dick Picked this Show for ” Us “!! The mixed-up, multi-surprise set list is just grand. The boys burn the candle at both ends throughout all-three Discs here in VA. Words don’t describe the specifics here, as I’ll just let the music do the talking. However, do prepare yourself & get ready for one of Bobby’s greatest verbal improv’s ever during the midst of a Blistering-Hot! Gloria’ : After that, I just don’t know where my baby went – maybe went up in a space-shuttle, or maybe ran for Pres-i-dent! ? ! You’ve just gotta love this stuff…. Or, like Dick says himself – Caveat Emptor! And remember to turn’ Up’ the Volume Knob – on This-One!!!!! Down & Dirty Good Ol’ ” Mid-’80’s ” Grateful Dead!! Sheer Rock & Roll Muscle!!! Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 26 Volume Twenty Six : April 26, 1969 (4/26/1969) – Electric Theater – Chicago, Illinois (IL) & April 27, 1969 (4/27/1969) – Labor Temple – Minneapolis, Minnesota (MN) : 2002 (1969/2002) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDP) – GDCD 4046 :’ Original! 69 Live-Dead with some Amazing! Grateful Dead Productions 1st Issue Printing (GDCD 4046) – Not the Real Gone Re-Issue / Re-Print!! Good Ol’ Grateful Dead Fans!!! Here offered is the Rare’ Original’ 1st Printing! (GDCD 4046) of the Amazing!! Dick’s Picks Volume 26 2-CD Set from both the Electric Theater in Chicago (4/26), and the Labor Temple in Minneapolis (4/27) in 1969. In my personal opinion and also the opinion of many others… This 2 CD release offers Out of This World!!! In both of these Spring’69 Shows the performances are downright aggressive almost vicious! , creative / fresh, and the heavy jamming & song-segue transitions neatly demonstrate the early signs that this was simply a band like no other. I’ve often joked that there’s a small chance that these Shows might very well be the Very-First GREAT!!! Two (2) truly Magnificent! ” time-capsules ” of The Grateful Dead at their early (and arguably) 1st ” Best “. In sharing my personal opinion that this release is (believe it or not) a true candidate for ” Top Five (5) Dick’s Picks ” of the 36 in the Series! Naturally, of course depending on your ear-for-era and personal favorite time-periods & tours – but the powerful nature of this release can simply not be denied. And to think that sheer’69 G. Like this happened on 2-straight nights in 2 different mid-west cities! ? ! I think I want this whole’69 Spring Tour released… The more I think about. Garcia’s Gibson-tone is just flat out raunchy & awesome! Phil pushes the time-structure & jamming pockets like there is no tomorrow – consistently challenging Garcia, who openly welcomes it. Presence & sound-tones of the equipment seem to be ” just-right “, nearly perfect – really. & Mickey ravage the drums with near-perfection – as tempos change, and the band takes some big transitional-chances here – while both of them never even drop a beat. The China Cat > Doin’ That Rag > Cryptical > Other One > It’s a Sin are absolutely mind-blowing, and the Lovelight > Me & My Uncle > Sitting On Top of the World offers brilliant segue-transitions that will likely deliver chills up your spine. Oh, and here’s what Disc 2 has to say about that : Dark Star > St. Stephen > Eleven > Lovelight > Dew!!!!! If you haven’t heard this one, you really need to. And if you don’t already own this one in your collection? – then you might really want to consider doing so – seriously. This release is a flat-out Heater! Where our beloved Grateful Dead have just realized that they really-are-actually ” Just That Good “, and they show it all-night-long here – twice! – in April’69 for some so very fortunate Chicago & Minneapolis crowds. Some truly unreal musicianship is offered here – most definitely. And Thank You Dick for This-One!!! TRACK LISTING >>> Grateful Dead’ Live’ at the Electric Theater in Chicago, Illinois (IL) on April 26, 1969 (4/26/1969) – and – at the Labor Temple in Minneapolis, Minnesota (MN) on April 27, 1969 (4/27/1969) : CD 1 : Dupree’s Diamond Blues > Mountains Of The Moon > China Cat Sunflower > Doin’ That Rag Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > The Eleven > The Other One > I Know It’s A Sin Turn On Your Lovelight > Me & My Uncle > Sitting On Top Of The World CD 2 : Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Turn On Your Lovelight Morning Dew. Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 31 Volume Thirty One : August 4 & 5, 1974 (8/4/1974 & 8/5/1974) – 8/4-5/1974 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PA) & August 6, 1974 (8/6/1974) 8/6/74 – Jersey City, New Jersey (NJ): 2004 (1974/2004) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDP) – GDCD 4051 : Original! 2004 release Not the 2012 Re-Issue / Re-Print! : 4 CD Set : Very-Rare!!! 4-CD Set >>>> Dick’s Picks 31 from 1974!!! Philadelphia Civic Center – Philadelphia, PA (8/4-5/1974) – and – Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ (8/6/1974) : Wall of Sound!!!!!!! Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. As it appears 1974 Grateful Dead is indeed fresh on the menu these days – and appears to be right back in Style as if it ever left! As the recent-fashion of the day. A few of the newer releases from the G. Vault are fine performances from 1974 :’74 Dillon Stadium (Hartford, CT) release (DP # 2) –’74 Cap Centre (Landover, MD) – (DP 2012 Bonus Disc) — and’74 University of Montana – Missoula, MT (DP # 9)!!! And, as we already well know, these were the final glorious days of the monstrous & beautifully sounding ” Wall of Sound ” – the massive, and downright-genius Sound System of The Grateful Dead in 1974! It debuted in February’74, and delivered a pristine & unmatched live concert for Grateful Dead Fans like no other. Unfortunately, as the documented stories & proof goes – this beast of a system took a toll on the inner-Grateful Dead Family, both Band & Road Crew too! As fine as it sounded it became a physical, logistical & large financial drain on our heroes yes, you too ” Road Crew ” are our heroes as well – as hopefully you already knew! This system was one of many factors that lead to the darn-near disbanding of the band during the ” hiatus ” period at the end of 1974, following the October Winterland run. Eleven (11) separate Channels! So with that – I’ll inform you of the specific details of how the ” Wall ” does more than its fair-share on this treasure of a G. Disc 1 offers a simply Must hear Playin’, Scarlet & China Rider!!! Wow & that’s just CD 1! ? ! Disc 2 would probably pride itself on the Weather Report > Jam! > Wharf Rat where band communication gets nice & spacey just how we like it! Disc 3 & 4 really duke it out for the top stop, and here’s how : CD Three delivers a He’s Gone > Truckin’ > Jam! > Other One Jam! > Space > Stella Blue that may be some of the finest musical notes & interplay that ever came out of the ” Wall “. Then, if that’s not enough Dead-for-Your-Head, then Disc 4 answers with this, and simply this : Eyes > Playin’ > Scarlet > Playin’ & Uncle John’s Band. So, as it pretty much goes without saying — this release is a Must-hear… & Must-own too for any serious fan who prides themselves on owning every professional release that captures those moments when the band is at their best. Hey up there Dick! Thanks for springing this one on us, yet another hidden-gem from that gold-mine vault of treasures that we never knew existed. Are the absolute-best at these surprises & for that we Thank-You! & are Forever Grateful!! I mean dig-in & Enjoy!!! Blues Sugar Magnolia Casey Jones CD 3 : Mississippi Hefl-Step Uptown Toodeloo > It Must Have Been The Roses Big River He’s Gone > Truckin’ > Jam > Other One Jam > Space > Stella Blue One More Saturday Night CD 4 : Eyes Of The World Playing In The Band > Scarlet Begonias > Playing In The Band Uncle John’s Band. Item Condition : This Very-Rare!! 2004 GDP release (GDCD 4051) Grateful Dead Dick’s Picks 31 (8/4-5/1974 Philadelphia Civic Center – Philadelphia, PA & 8/6/1974 Roosevelt Stadium – Jersey City, NJ) 4-CD Set is in Good/Very Good condition – close to Very Good overall. CD’s (Disc 1, Disc 2, Disc 3, Disc 4) are in Good/Very Good condition with light-medium scratches/marks on the playing surfaces (cosmetic-only) – please see photos.
Dick’s Picks 21!!!! Grateful Dead Dick's Picks 8 Volume Eight Binghamton NY Harpur 5/2/1970 3 CD
Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 8 Volume Eight : May 2, 1979 (5/2/1970) – Harpur College – Binghamton, New York (NY) : 3 CD : 1997 (1970/1997) Grateful Dead Records / Grateful Dead Merchandising, Inc. (GDR / GDM) – GDCD 4028 :’ Original! Dick’s Picks release with’ Both’ Electric! In fact, the’ Only! Dick’s Picks with’ Acoustic’ Grateful Dead!!!!! Good Ol’ Grateful Dead! , now that’s like a Pavlov’s Dog word to many Deadheads that will make their mouths well, ears! For many analog (& probably reel-to-reel too) tape collectors, both the 5/2/70 & 11/6/77 shows were very well circulated – often with above-average pristine sound. These tapes were basically cherished possessions of fans for both 27 & 20 years respectively, way-back in 1997 when this fabulous Dick’s Picks Volume 8 hit the shelves in record stores fortunate enough to receive it. Just like the 11/6/77 Show represents the Grateful Dead at their absolute best in 1977 — this 5/2/70 show represents the band at their absolute-best in 1970. And unlike in 1977, you have the glorious inclusion of a beautiful’ Acoustic’ set – in addition to two aggressive & sometimes heavy! Yet still very musically poised’ Electric’ sets — and last but not least, you also have Pigpen!!! Yeah, that always helps!! This 3-CD Set simply represents The Grateful Dead at a musical crossroads, which could also be considered their ” 1st Big Prime ” – and to many-many Fans… It is indeed the Grateful Dead at their very-best. Words can’t really describe this one, and it makes complete sense why this is the favorite Dick’s Picks release of many Deadheads… Including a Deadhead you have probably heard of, or might know? His name is Dick! He himself referred to DP # 8 as The Show Of All Shows! Not certain if that opinion & claim ever did change? It makes perfect sense to me. This show is a ridiculous Heater!!! I know many people consider DP #29 (5/19/77 & 5/21/77) their favorite Dick’s Picks release, but because that one is two (2) complete shows and six (6) full discs! , I do believe it is safe to consider this comparison just a bit of an unfair-fight. Hey, but the reality is – the three (3) CD’s in this set could probably hold their own against almost any 3-CD’s there are! – and not I’m just talking’ about in the Dick’s Picks Series… No joke at all here – take listen for yourself! Sincerely, if you have not heard this 5/2/70 performance – please take my advice and take care of that. You owe it to yourself & will be absolutely delighted if you love your ” Good Ol’ Grateful Dead “! This one is truly Un-believable! TRACK LISTING >>> Grateful Dead recorded’ Live’ (both Electric & Acoustic) at Harpur College in Binghamton, New York (NY) on May 2, 1970 (5/2/1970) : DISC 1 : Don’t Ease Me In I Know You Rider Friend Of The Devil Dire Wolf Beat It On Down The Line > Black Peter Candyman Cumberland Blues Deep Elem Blues Cold Jordan Uncle John’s Band DISC 2 : St. Out of Print (1997 Grateful Dead Records / GDM) & Incredible!! Grateful Dead Dick's Picks 3 Volume Three Pembroke Pines FL 5/22/77 1977 UK 2 CD
Grateful Dead : Dick’s Picks 3 Volume Three : May 22, 1977 (5/22/1977) – Sportatorium – Pembroke Pines – Florida (FL) : 2 CD : GDCD2 4022 : 1995 (1977/1995) Grateful Dead Records / Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. (GDR / GDP) – Very-Rare! Made In The UK! May 1977 Grateful Dead!!!!! Wow, way-back now – or at least I suppose. That’s when this one was released & the circumstances were as very-strange as they ever could ever possibly be, as my memory distinctly serves me. We were all devastated, and busy trying to lick a wound that we knew deep down would never heal. Jerry Garcia died on 8/9/1995, and this was the 1st ” Dick’s Picks ” released after his untimely passing. DP # 3 (5/22/77) was released in November’95, and normally this well-anticipated trip over to the CD Store would be like waiting for Santa Claus! To come to town, but – not this time. So, I still made the journey though, because I needed at least something in a feeble attempt to soothe the devastating situation at hand. Well knowing this could be good or bad, happy or sad. It ended up being lots of every emotion possible, quite naturally… But oh my goodness, what a monster release by Dick!!! ? ! I mean are you kidding me? ! ? I always had a real fondness for’77 Dead, and when I was a kid I would claim that I thought it was indeed the Grateful Dead at their ” Absolute-Finest “. I swore-by’77 Grateful Dead – and still do, of course. Over the years, my opinion has been all over the board as times & my musical tastes change – but there still is no denying 1977 as one-of (if not’ the’) best overall year for the Band. I had a majority of’77 in my cherished analog collection, and thankfully had a few very connected folks that looked out for me when it came to my’77 addiction… But when I got my hands on this 2-CD set, I was absolutely blown back – a truly Beyond-Powerful performance!! I guess some of it was that I strangely had yet to even hear it? But the two-track stereo sound was mind-blowing from a channel / separation standpoint. I mean this performance is right up there with the Binghamton’s – Buffalo’s – St. Louis’ – Manor Downs’ – Ithaca’s – Winterland’s, etc.. Of the’77 World. CD One gives you no-mercy & straight up cooks! With burning versions of Music – Lightning > Supplication – Dancin’ & Help > Slip! Then CD Two actually delivers yes, it’s true… ” Very-Best Grateful Dead I had ever heard “. Up there on the very ultra! Outside of a Rockin’ Samson, and incredibly-deep & exploratory versions of Estimated > Eyes — here comes the real doozie : Two (2) of the finest segue / song transitions in Grateful Dead History. I won’t discuss the specifics, or details because only the music itself can do that properly naturally… But what happens during Wharf Rat > Terrapin > Morning Dew is simply live-musical-perfection, and in a completely genius fashion! These are really the only words I can think of to use & explain… As truly, this is the kind of music that really cannot be’put’ into words – as to try, is to almost do it an injustice. This is really just that good. This piece of Grateful Dead’ Live’ History… DP # 3 — one of the Very-Very Best Ever! To this very day. The crazy-rare “UK Printing” GDCD2 4022’Made In The UK format!! My fellow Dead Fans!!! This is a 3-CD Set, and you are also treated to Seven (7) Bonus Tracks from the 11/2/77 Toronto, Ontario Show just three (3) nights prior. This was ” Dick’s Last Pick from the’77 Well “, and in some ways he did indeed save some nuggets of the best stuff for last. As with much of’77 Dead, the percussion time-keeping is just immaculate – but this is indeed one of those more-so uptempo nights where the energy flows freely, and good timing leads to good vocals, to good stage charisma, and to pushing the envelopes when the pockets present themselves. Vocally, they’re just on! Shows like this & Englishtown too! Make me wonder why he ever permanently parted with that MXR Distortion + and MXR Analog Delay… With the Reticon Chip! — these things just Take-Charge! — I mean turning Solos! But then again, it is Garcia driving them… The King of Rock’n Roll! And nobody can do it just’quite’ like him. Hip, hip hurrAhhh for this 1977 Grateful Dead Dick! I mean what else can I say?
