Frederich Grotrian joined Theodor Steinweg (son of Heinrich Steinweg) to manufacture pianos. Heinrich moved to New York and changed his name to Henry, and changed Steinweg to Steinway. The rest is history! Both piano companies have been producing world-class instruments over centuries. Grotrian-Steinweg is produced in Germany, and Steinway is produced both in Germany and New York. This is an extraordinary piano with a gorgeous rosewood polish finish. The wood grain is breathtaking. The hand-carvings of the case are also a lost art. The piano also has rare one piece ivory keytops in immaculate condition. The sound of this instrument is pure and warm. There is a richness and evenness of tone throughout all registers that is the result of one of the world’s great piano scale designs. The soundboard has visible seams and has excellent crown with solid connection to all the ribs. This is the heart and soul of the piano which is what gives this instrument its unique sound. The German action is on a world-class level of performance. The piano is all original and shows extremely minor wear anywhere inside or out! This is truly a piano find for someone who appreciates the finest pianos available at any price. Incidentally, Steinway sued Grotrian-Steinweg and won! This 6′ 2 Chickering Bros. Acoustigrande grand piano has new (old stock) black and white keys and a perfect, flawless sound board. It was manufactured in the 30s, when materials were top grade, and piano craftsmen were at their best. Comes with matching bench. The best part, however, is that it plays as good as it looks (see photos).

This is because the quality of workmanship was exceptional since there were hundreds of piano companies to compete with. The challenge is having a piano from this era that is in fine condition. Rebuilding a Steinway to a high level can be very expensive, and the quality can vary depending upon who does the work. This piano has had the good fortune of having been rebuilt in 2002 by master piano rebuilder, John Foy. Even better than that, the piano has been lovingly cared for through the ages which is evident in the nearly perfect keys and impeccable original soundboard. The piano was also refinished but not with the typical lacquer finish, but it is an open pore finish which is very presentable. The action work has been performed utilizing low mass repetitions. So the piano is very responsive. The tone is rich and warm. Through most of the 20th century Steinway produced the model L in New York and the O in Germany even though they are the same size. Today, the L is no longer manufactured, and the model O is made in both New York and Hamburg. Either way, at just under 6-feet, this is a great size Steinway for most homes. It has the original soundboard with excellent crown which produces a rich, warm tone. The piano has new strings, pinblock, tuning pins, damper felts, hammers, shanks, knuckles, backchecks, key bushings, front rail bushings, and the piano has been refinished the classic sprayed lacquer which is hand-rubbed for a lustrous appearance. The plate has been re-bronzed, and all metal parts have been re-plated. So it looks and plays like new. The action is smooth as silk and responds to the most delicate or thunderous touch. It’s almost impossible to get a harsh sound out of this instrument! From the whispering tones, to thunderous crashes of colorful sound, you will be enveloped in the sound as your hands glide effortlessly over the keys. This piano is all original and has been lovingly cared for and shows almost no signs of wear. So everything is in like new condition. (Pianos Don’t Age).
