The Business- Stilwell Pianos was started in 1956 by my grandfather, Ralph Stilwell RPT. Grandpa Ralph was always interested in musical instruments and after the war, quickly found his niche as the piano guy in Southern Illinois (Decatur to be exact). During his career, he served on the Piano Technician Guilds board as well as helped design pianos for Yamaha in Japan. In the early 1980s he was inducted into the Piano Technician Guilds hall of fame and was flown around the country giving seminars on the art of piano tuning and repair. Before Grandpa Ralph passed away, I graduated from The American School of Piano Tuning and started my career as a piano technician in Phoenix Arizona. I soon took over the business and spent many years servicing Stilwell Pianos clients pianos in their homes, churches and schools. I have since retired from in home work in order to focus on the showroom as well as run my new side project Piano Technician Academy. The PTA is the first and only completely online piano tuning school in the country and is picking up steam quickly. For more information on the school check it out here. Where Our Pianos Come From- We get our pianos in an number of different ways. We also get about 6-8 calls a day from people trying to sell us their pianos. In addition to “call-ins” we also work with a bunch of buyers, real estate companies, estate sale companies, movers, flippers, teachers and technicians who regularly provide us with top notch pianos. If for some reason, we do not have a piano that you LOVE, we are more than happy to help you find it. It is very important to us that your piano is everything you were hoping for. People typically keep their pianos for many years and the last thing we want is to sell you a piano that you are just O. For that reason, we dont push any sale on our customers and we are more than happy to walk away from a sale if we feel you are not completely happy with your decision. We are here to help! Steinway studio upright 1938, in excellent condition! Height: 116 cm (45.5) width: 146 cm depth: 64 cm. This is a New York made Steinway from the Golden era of American piano building. We have put new German Abel Select hammers, new key tops, and have refreshed the finish. The piano has also been fully regulated, tuned and voiced for a warm, even tone throughout all registers. Pianos like this are increasingly rare. Steinway only produces a handful of upright pianos each year and the price have made them unattainable for most persons. The piano features and art deco design with hints of old world craftsmanship not seen anymore. It has the original matching bench which is great for two reasons first, you would hardly find a piano bench to match the rare design of this piano. And, it indicates a well-cared piano as benches are not usually. As durable as pianos. For the price of a decent Asian-production upright piano, you can have a top of the line Steinway to enjoy. Antique Steinway Upright Piano & Bench Model 40 Built in 1942. From Lyon & Healy
Antique Steinway Upright Piano, Model 40, with Piano Bench. Amazing construction and craftsmanship. This piano belonged to my grandparents in Chicago. Myers, Florida in 1971. In 1975, my parents moved it back to Chicago, where it has remained in the same home for 44 years. In our home, it was played regularly from the 1970s through the 1990s. Now it only gets played occassionally. My grandmother made the needlepoint cushion, which has always been covered in clear plastic, affixed to the bench. Introduced in 1939, the Model 40 Upright Piano was the first 40 vertical piano offered by Steinway. Steinway wrote’About 1935, it became apparent that if our industry was to survive, it must supply a demand for an attractively styled Vertical piano, and be attractively styled it would have to be as low in height from the floor as possible. The Model 40 was the result of that development. This vintage upright piano was built in 1942 and features a rare Flame Mahogany Burled Wood Hepplewhite Style in a natural mahogany. This attractive styling was offered from between 1940 and 1953. Steinway offered this Model 40 in well over a dozen different case styles including the Hepplewhite, Louis XV and even a Victory Style specifically designed for military use during World War II. Measurements: 40″ tall x 23 3/4″ D x 4′ 9 W. Condition: This is a used piano that is almost 80 years old. At a minimum, it has been moved from Chicago to Florida and back to Chicago. It has some scratches, needs to be tuned, and may need other work. Please examine the photos carefully. The piano is priced accordingly. All items are from a pet-friendly home. Local pick-up is always free. Pick-Up: This piano is located in a one-story home in Arlington Heights, IL. I strongly recommend hiring professional movers. Charles Walter Upright Queen Anne in Cherry Hand Built Ship or Pick up
This piano dates from 1990 and is in very good condition. Charles Walter is known for quality pianos and one of the few pianos that are still built in the U. I’m downsizing and need to part with this family piano. The keys and pedals work, and the sound resonates nicely. The piano is in need of a tune-up but no repairs are required. The cherry is very rich in color. There are a few surface scratches on the lid and on the music shelf. There is a nick on top of the fall board and a superficial line/crack on the left leg. These are shown in images 6-9. The cosmetic flaws do not detract from the beauty of this piano. The piano is located on the first floor for easy moving. The piano weighs about 450 pounds. This is a 1903 Steinway Model N upright grand piano. Good condition, with original keys. It has been taken care of well throughout it’s 115 year life. Regular tunings and consistent playing until the last few years. Sounds amazing – like a traditional grand piano but takes up less space. Needs a good home, and to be played like it used to!
